How to Help a Friend in Fear

How to Be with a Friend in Fear

Overcoming fear is part of life since man was chased by dinosaurs, yet how do you fight the fear of influences out of your control? No cave dwellers ever faced the constant barrage of CNN (continuous negative news) or the most insidious trends in the destruction of our very way of life. The next few weeks will be highlighted by meeting friends and family, some of which will be forcing a smile through the constricted guts that are gripped in fear.

Yesterday I was meeting with the owner of small business who wants me to train their sales staff on developing better skills of connecting and communicating. His business model has been turned upside down, which has resulted in near panic from a financial point of view. This feeling of fear has spread through his organization, just in time for the annual holiday party. In the evening, I met with a patient who complained of high stress, fear about his future, the ability to continue to support two children in college in a business environment that no longer values him. This has produced the physical symptoms of headaches, chronic back pain, sleep disturbance, gastric inflammation and the constant mental focus on fear and worry that leave him depleted at the end of the day. Both situations share having fear for the holidays.

Leadership Tips for a Fearful Friend

Face Reality: We almost always have options in our life. Fear creates mental chaos, disabling our normal skills of sorting and exploring the best path ahead. Fear blocks the ability to understand the situation and find a creative path forward. Fear keeps you stuck in your stuff. Help your friend in fear by listening and asking good questions so they self-discover their own reality. Listen first. Fear often sounds less powerful when it’s expressed.
Build Confidence: Fear blocks our confidence. Fear smothers our deep belief that everything will eventually work out. Let your friend in fear borrow your own confidence. Share with them a story of yourself or another friend who overcame adversity. These stories abound because we’re doing it all the time. Now more than ever, we are re-inventing ourselves. It’s been done, so your friend in fear can do it too. Lend your confidence. Remind them of why you are friends and how much value you place in your friendship.
Win with Teamwork: Fear separates us from the ones who love and care for us. Fear can bring on shame, which often leads to people and businesses pulling back instead of reaching out for support. As the saying goes “Team work makes the dream work.” Help your friend in fear identify the people and businesses that they have helped in troubled times and consistently added value in their lives. These are the resources that become the foundation for your new team. Assist your friend in fear with connecting, collaborating, understanding the rich relationships they have fostered over many years and begin to pool the resources of a new team.
Attitude Matters: Fear hangs on you like a wet blanket and begins to color every sentence that falls from your lips betraying the deep desperate fear that lurks inside. Your friend in fear may not realize that their attitude, if not watched and guarded, will project the fear, not the facts. This will leave potential sympathetic allies looking for the exits. Help your friend in fear to guard against explosive emotional out crying of unfair situations in life or railing against a certain challenge that has created a setback. Help them by mirroring their behavior back to them and explaining how their comments make you feel. How you feel is probably close to how others feel. Your friend in fear does not want to come off as deranged, so this will help them to monitor their attitude.

The Highest Form of Help

“I don’t know what to do!” This has never happened before.” How do I get out of this mess?” I have witnessed a disturbing trend in both my training and clinical practice that involves overwhelming confusion about taking the next step. I have been a student of personal and business development my entire life. I found John Maxwell’s content and wisdom to be greatly beneficial in my life. That’s why I use it as one of my tools when speaking, training or healthcare. Listen to why he chose to share this with us now.

Focus on Your Friend in Fear

We all have fear that runs through us. The key is keeping it moving and not letting it take root within you. So when a friend tells you they are in fear about their finances, job security, the economy, future of their children, and the execution of the middle class you have to focus on helping them because let’s face it, we all have these concerns. I can tell you having been in healthcare and consulting for over twenty-five years, put your own fear aside and focus on assisting others. Leaders ask great questions. Ask your friend in fear these two simple questions to help them pull out of their fear. What am I learning from this experience? How can this be of benefit to others? Leaders and great friends emerge during challenging times. Be a friend always and especially if someone you care about is facing fear. Let me know how these steps work for you. I invite you to leave a comment on this article, join our blog for updates and like us on Face book to receive more helpful and healthful tips during these challenging times.

Avoid Back Pain and The Temple of Doom

Beware the Drama of Back Pain

Beware of back pain warning signs. Back pain and it’s co-star villain, burning sciatica, will take you by surprise and ruin your week! Discover the story of a reluctant healthcare professional who explored acupuncture to finally stop back pain and burning sciatica. This patient’s journey to FirstHealth of Andover is told in her bold, brilliant and honest fashion, while allowing us all to learn how she searched for ways to relieve the chronic pain that was making a stressful situation worse.

Back Pain is a Three Legged Stool

Back pain often occurs with predictable patterns that I’ve observed over treating patients for over twenty-five years of acupuncture practice. I’m a visual learner, so I express ideas with patients in pictures. The three legged stool is one of my favorite analogies to help us all understand how a condition, such as back pain with sciatica, can suddenly take over our lives, with all the ferocity of a powerful dictator. Are you about to go over the waterfall? Two out of three means you’re headed for trouble.

1st Leg: General Fatigue. You’ve been working long hours and are exhausted! It’s right before a holiday or a scheduled vacation, so if you can just put in a few extra hours you’ll get some of this heavy stuff off your plate and enjoy a sun soaked get-a-way. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard this same scenario. When your body is depleted, a warning flag should be flying! Tired, exhausted bodies are primed for punishment. You have now set the stage for your body to lose some of its ability to heal and back pain to ruin your vacation.

2nd Leg: Specific Fatigue. “I just had to finish raking the yard. I was almost done.” How about this one, “I wanted to clean the garage on such a nice day” or “My proposal needed to meet the deadline, so I just pushed through.” Once you have overused a muscle or a group of muscles doing a specific task, they and you are now unable to recover quickly enough to avoid impending doom. Specific fatigue of the muscles in the back and hip are common during moving out of a home, yard work and shoveling after snow storms. Back pain can also be aggravated from prolonged sitting, while at a desk or driving for long hours. Does this sound like you? As one of my favorite TV quotes from the robot in Lost in Space, “Warning Will Robinson, warning!”

3rd Leg: Stress. We live our lives in a swirling sea of stress, so what’s the big deal? High or prolonged makes everything worse. It’s on all the naughty lists of what to avoid for staying healthy. Some stress we experience as enjoyable, such as getting ready for a night out or finishing a project or not. These could be fun for some and incredibly challenging for others. Stress is personal. What sends you over the edge? When you are exhausted with a tired and achy back and stress begins to chase you down then back pain is now threatening to ambush you on the trail like a sneaky villain in an old western movie. Reach out for help. Even The Lone Ranger had Tonto!

Avoid Back Pain and The Temple of Doom

Indiana Jones, the adventurous archeologist from the long running film series, finds ways to get in and out of trouble. Just like in movie magic, we can preview back pain without succumbing to the gravitational pull of pain. Take a moment to self-reflect on your own situation and see how many legs are on your back pain stool. I have used acupuncture therapy or Traditional Chinese Medicine TCM to assist patients once they have crossed the line of self-help recovery. Staying healthy and avoiding the paralyzing pitfalls of back pain is still the best medicine.

21 Ways to Succeed During Turbulent Times

Solutions for Frazzled and Frustrated!

Leadership is needed most when our world is turned upside down, leaving our lives and businesses scrambling for direction. In the Northeast, we are recovering from a freakishly powerful Halloween weekend snowstorm, with all tricks and no treats, that has left a wake of destruction, confusion and frustration.

Good Witch or Bad Witch?

It’s been said that there are three things that cannot be hidden for long: the sun, the moon and the truth. Stressful and turbulent times draw out our inner leadership so swiftly that we are stripped of the usual image management. The Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou calls for a referendum on the debt rescue plan and stuns the world financial markets days before the G20 Economic Summit. It was reportedly his leadership decision. Does this show insight or insanity?

Leadership Supplement

I listen to stories of worried business owners in my leadership consulting role and witness the effects of prolonged stress in my patients in our medical clinic. Now more than ever, it is time to equip ourselves with the necessary knowledge to succeed. Most business leaders I train have an abundance of courage and passion that they willingly combine with a strong work ethic. What I often prescribe is a leadership supplement that compliments their existing skills, which will then focus on reliably tested leadership principles.

21 Ways to Win

One of my favorite sources for content you can count on is John Maxwell’s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. I will be hosting a conference call, open to all who wish to increase their leadership awareness and ability through mastermind group study of this insightful book. As a John Maxwell certified coach, trainer and speaker, I have been trained by John Maxwell and his team to facilitate these powerful leadership principles using his own study guide and personal notes. This is the first time he has ever allowed his materials to be used by others. He has trained me and others throughout the globe to share his extensive leadership training experience, while customizing the calls with our own unique experiences. Some of my client’s favorite leadership principles or “Laws” for improving your daily effectiveness include:

The Law of Influence: Discover the five Influence Myths of Leadership. Leadership is not a title, position, power or stature. A leader’s influence is relational and must be earned.

The Law of Process: Learn the five phases of leadership. You will find out it’s what you learn after you know that counts most.
The Law of Navigation: Anyone can steer a ship but it takes a leader to chart the course. Explore why vision must solve an issue to be compelling.
The Law of Connection: Want to learn proven principles to connect more effectively with others? Authentic connectors must be curious about another’s passion and purpose.
The Law of Buy-In: Do you give people a reason to follow you? Discover how leadership requires others to buy-in to you before they follow your vision. Learn four principles to improve your own awareness and develop more effective habits.

When Leadership Matters Most

We all have people who count on us to make the best leadership choices for our lives and businesses. What is the cost of failure in your life? Will under-achieving your own potential have devastating repercussions on those around you? I invite you to join us on this dynamic leadership call that is designed to empower you for the coming week. Start each Monday with a positive outlook, equipped with solutions forged from combining the experience of a global team of leaders. Click here to learn more and register. Please share this with others who you believe would benefit from the knowledge and experience of a team committed to leadership excellence.

Infertility Struggles Overcome: IVF and Acupuncture Success!

Love Looking Back at Us!

Discover how combining acupuncture and IVF lead to fertility success by getting pregnant, carrying full term and delivering a healthy baby into the loving arms of this amazing family. Issues of infertility are one of the most challenging for couples to face. Fertilization can involve more than you ever imagined, while the stress on a relationship, discussing possibilities of IVF, being diagnosed with infertility and the many sleepless nights take a significant toll on people who have made the most loving choice of becoming parents.

What is Fertility?

The video you are about to watch, takes you on one women’s reflection of a long and challenging path of infertility. She and her husband withstood nineteen previous fertility procedures before seeking acupuncture therapy from David Sollars at FirstHealth of Andover. You will see Julie sitting beside her daughter Samantha and playing on the floor with her new baby Bryce. It touches my heart every time I watch her speak about the overcoming the frustrations, stress, physical and emotional challenges that threatened her fertility success. Julie and her husband’s courage combined with conviction on many occasions to bring her beautiful baby boy Bryce into this world. I was privileged to be part of her team. Enjoy her inspirational story.

Acupuncture and IVF

Acupuncture therapy has been aiding families with infertility challenges for several centuries and the past ten years has seen a significant rise in successful outcomes from studies showcasing the merits of adding acupuncture therapy to your infertility treatment protocols. At FirstHealth of Andover, I use TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine for a range of beneficial possibilities:

Stress: Lowering stress and the subsequent chemicals that are produced by stress and hamper the fertility process are a very real benefit of acupuncture treatments. My experience is that the process of getting pregnant to delivering a healthy baby is a marathon and not a sprint.

IVF: Studies show that adding acupuncture therapy to your existing IVF procedures greatly enhance your chances of getting pregnant.

Pre-existing Conditions: At Firsthealth of Andover, we welcome the opportunity to assist in overall wellness, which often includes achieving general health for a women, while working towards increasing her potential for successful outcomes in fertility. We work together with you on a wide-range of conditions and give you many opportunities to increase your own knowledge and effectiveness with your own medical leadership.

Fertility Success Combines Wellness with Genuine Support

Infertility challenges place and almost unimaginable level of stress on women both physically and emotionally. Both are real and both in my opinion deserve very real support. Julie’s story is even more powerful for having been on the team that finally helped her and her husband achieve a successful pregnancy, carry full term and deliver a healthy baby boy. Wow! So many twists and turns that I witnessed and saw her rise to the level of courage that I have come to admire in her and so many families that I’ve been privileged to care for during some of the most stressful and rewarding times in their lives. We practice genuine support and authentic caring at FirstHealth of Andover. I encourage you to add acupuncture therapy to your IVF treatments.

I hope Julie’s story has given you some much needed encouragement. I invite you to leave your comments on this article. How to Use a Leadership Mindset to Harness The Power of Your Thoughts

Does Your Mindset Launch or Sink your Dreams?

Your Thoughts Can Kill!

Your potential in life will be realized in its full glory or swept into the corner of your memory along with all the other painful failures unless you gain power over your own thoughts. This concept is the very foundation that all your plans and actions rest on throughout your career. Your own thoughts can help or kill your dreams. This blog from FirstHealth of Andover’s Momentum Leadership Series brings to light the two kinds of mindsets that we develop over our lives. Pick the one you most identify with in your own life.

Fixed Mindset: A belief system that recognizes you are born with or without a specified talent. Your potential in an area of your life is fixed and can never be changed or adapted. You may recognize someone with this mindset by their comments such as “That’s the hand I’ve been dealt” or “I’m not good at that” or” I can’t do that” or finally “I’ll never be able to become that!” They have sadly limited their life’s potential by what they know of themselves, without allowing for improvement.

Growth Mindset: A belief system that recognizes we are born with certain abilities that can be improved, honed and added to as we develop in life. This mindset believes in unlimited potential and your ability over time to learn any and all skills needed in life to achieve ultimate success. You may recognize someone with this mindset by their comments such as “I can do that”, “I don’t know it yet, but I’ll learn it and get back to you” or my favorite “Someone must know the answer to this, so I’ll study with them until I figure it out.” There is not limitations imposed on this mindset, rather a heartfelt belief that anything is possible and someone is available to teach it.

How to Sabotage Your Success

You have ultimate power in your life unless you choose to throw it away and sabotage your success. When you begin a journey of self improvement, you at once expose your inadequacies and deficiencies. How will that feel to you? Will you continue through this discomfort to achieve the success you crave? A fixed mindset will shut down, while a person with a growth mindset will battle the internal elements in order to expand their ability. It’s not always easy to overcome shortcomings, yet the reward of being able to access your true potential is worth all the effort. Dig in, develop and achieve all the success you desire.

I would love to hear your stories and examples of how your own mindset either floated or sunk your dreams. Please leave your comments below. To make sure you get a little leadership lesson now and again, like FirstHealth of Andover on Facebook, share the blog with others and check out our main site www.firsthealthofandover.com. here’s to your winning leadership mindset!

Creating a Legacy Life: Leadership Stories of Courage, Vision and Achievement

Servant Leadership Means Action!

Leadership Begins and Ends While in the Service of Others

I love listening to stories. I think we all do. It’s the best way to share important historical achievements of courage and demonstrate that the vision of leadership is a powerful guide on the journey of life. Creating a legacy life allows us all to live with a strong spirit of giving through service to others, which will predictably result in living a high impact life. It’s what we dream of as a child or deludes ourselves as adults. No child dreams of being ordinary and no adult has delusions of grandeur that they are a seaman onboard with Homer’s Ulysses. They dream of being Ulysses and struggling against all odds to get your men back to their homes and families! We feel the possibility of greatness inside of us and along the way we find guidance for our brand of leadership. I propose to you that service to others is the key that will unlock your true leadership potential. The video below, from FirstHealth of Andover’s Momentum Leadership Series, outlines the three steps for creating a legacy life.

Awaken Your Spirit: Discover the community service, civic or religious project that propels you to action. Hear their stories and feel the motivation swell inside you compelling you to contribute.

Break Free from the Bonds that Hold you Back: We create most of the bonds that hold us back from reaching our leadership potential. Breaking free takes vision and courage. I find that removing me from the center is helpful in that it also liberates me from the gravitation pull of my own limiting habits. Instead, say to yourself “These kids really need my help and this community center could use a hand during this crucial time. I must find a way to help them.” Now use your abilities to help the children and make no excuses, because the center needs you to succeed. You will both end up winning!

Your Butterfly Moment: When passion and purpose unite it is a beautiful moment that transforms your life forever. Once you have felt the power of giving, while in the service of others there is no substitute. You will spread your leadership wings and soar to new levels of achievement.

I hope you have your butterfly moment and that this video from Team Modern Success and it’s Momentum Leadership series has helped in some way to remind you of lessons you already know to be true. I would enjoy hearing your stories by leaving a comment below. Please share with others that may not know about this blog, visit our main website at www.firsthealthofandover.com and stay connected with us by “liking” FirstHealth of Andover on Facebook. I look forward to hearing your stories.

How to Create Habitual Inspiration with Five Key Leadership Actions

Inspiration is a Choice

Leadership Requires More Than Just Staying Above the Dirt

W.C Fields is quoted as saying “Remember, a dead fish can float down a stream, but it takes a live one to swim upstream.” I exchanged greetings with a colleague this week, which although being a common enough occurrence, rattled me into contemplating my commitment towards inspiration. I said “How are you on this sunny New England day?” and my friend said “Any day above the dirt is a good day!” He went on to say in a dreary tone “I get up, go to work, find a way to survive, go home and eat, go to bed, get up and repeat.” I let out an uncomfortable chuckle, while he continued by saying “I live for the weekends.” Out of the 365 day a year, he’s telling me that he only feels alive for 104 of them. That’s when the math struck me. My friend is more dead than alive! He may be above the dirt, but he’s living as if he’s below it. He’s made a choice to mimic the actions of a dead fish and hope that somehow he makes it downstream.

Leaders Are Forged by Combining the Elements of Curiosity with Action, Under Intense Pressure

Take a look back in your life and examine the times when you were displaying some of the strongest instincts of leadership. You experienced daily inspiration, felt a sense of gratitude and articulated messages with a depth of emotion that resonated with your audience. Now look back in time just a little bit more and I think you’ll find the seeds of your leadership wisdom was grown during a time that you’d probably never choose to repeat ever again. Yet, that intensely challenging time, with all of the fear, doubt and inner turmoil created strength of conviction with a signature point of view. You now enjoy the knowledge from a class you’d never willingly sign up for now or ever again.

5 Keys Actions to Create Habitual Inspiration

• Explore Unknown Lands: Take a journey of discovery. Allow yourself to be transported by an idea, a good story or a passionate presentation. Think of possibilities. Let your senses have the freedom to lead you through a process of imagination and learn something about yourself along the way. One of my recent favorites is this Sapporo grand slam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-Rs6YEZAt8

Make Something Tasty: I admit to being a self taught foodie and part of a growing number of males over 39 years, well over, that enjoy cooking because of the well received contribution to your family with a wonderful sense of immediate gratification. Cooking is also creative. It combines a sprinkle of thought, instinct and planning with a dash of inspiration steamed in crisis management. Create something! Take a project from thought through execution and deliver to an end user. Brace for the reaction to your efforts. Lots of lessons there and worth doing. I’m a grill guy, Bobby Flay shines through as he re-invents himself and how we view the experience of food: http://www.foodnetwork.com/grill-it-with-bobby-flay/index.html

Do the Impossible: Rotary International, of which I am a proud member and humble past-president of our local club in Andover Massachusetts, does the impossible every day. They have created a culture of finding a mission so compelling that even sound login does not dissuade volunteers from digging into their innovation bag and pulling out resources that propel the impossible to completion. Serving on a non-profit board as a volunteer is one of the best methods I have ever experienced for learning to achieve in the face of insurmountable obstacles. Mission does matter. You will quickly find yourself caught up in solution thinking from extraordinary individuals who care enough to create a path to success. There are many wonderful organizations to learn this valuable skill set. This one has touched my heart: http://www.rotary.org/en/Pages/ridefault.aspx

Turn That Frown Upside Down: My grandchildren are mentoring me in this long sought after ability. I can certainly get stuck in the thick mud of disappointment, rejection and despair. Yesterday I found all the worries and concerns of the day melt away as I was bouncing little 21 month Sofie in my arms in front of a fish tank, while humming that popular chart popping tune “look at that fish.” It’s her fascination with life and the urgent discovery of all things around her that allows her to switch from a frown to unstoppable giggles. I have been fortunate to have apprenticed under several martial arts masters, high Tibetan priests and meditation gurus, which laid the proper foundation for my grand children as my current masters of a celebration life. Pick your favorite emotion about these little ones.: http://hubpages.com/hub/quotes-grandparents-day-grandparenting

Get Back On the Horse: There’s an old Japanese proverb that leads us down the path to success by stating “Fall down seven, get up eight.” Simple, yet within these six words hold the absolute key to achievement. Our fear of falling or failing often holds us back from even contemplating the start of a new venture. We allow our imaginations to be squashed by a future yet to be determined. Leaders envision a better ending to the story. Leadership demands that someone in the organization put all their fears aside and create action steps, which will lead to success. I have seen no better example of the literal and figurative example of inspirational courage through perseverance than at Ironstone Farm, a hypotherapy center for children with disabilities. My wife and I volunteer there and are grateful for the experiences of witnessing everything I’ve listed in this article and more, while children with a variety of disabilities learn to get back on the horse. Truly inspirational: http://www.challengeunlimited.org/

Helen Keller bolsters my confidence to create habits of being inspired no matter what the circumstances with her quote “security is mostly superstition. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” I deeply believe that our daily habits exert tremendous effect on our life, which lead us down paths that later become our legacy. What legacy will your current habits lead others to understand about you? Leaders learn to demand more than just being above the dirt as a standard of life. Start by following these 5 simple steps toward achieving inspiration in your daily life, and then define your own helpful habits. Make the process your own so it sticks for life. Inspiration is addicting. I think you’ll love it. Stay on a path of inspiration for life!

Steve Jobs is quoted as saying “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” It’s up to you to create daily habits that direct your life towards achieving the goals you’ve set, just as it is for me to strive to accomplish the same daily practices to keep myself on course. You are the captain. It’s as it should be for those that dare to take control of their own life. I invite you to leave your thoughts and comments below, like FirstHealth of Andover on Face book and enjoy more leadership topics like these. I look forward to hearing from you.

Always Fun, Slightly Irreverent and Always Always Worth the Trip

My wife and I began our Rotary journey over fourteen years ago after we attended a few breakfast meetings at the Lanam Club in Andover 7:30-8:30AM each Friday and to our surprise loved it! This is a young fun and gun club that does not take itself too seriously, yet does a serious amount of good in the community and beyond. We joke around with some of the most successful business men and women in our region, who gather each Friday to learn from the innovative speakers brought in to discuss with our membership and guests the top business stories that may impact our lives. My wife and I have found it fun and very satisfying to be a part of our Rotary Club of Andover. Some of our dearest friends and most influential business networking is done with the membership, who learns to admire and trust each other through service to others. It’s a great basis for lasting associations.

Time to Act and Act Up!

I invite you to join us for comedy night on Oct 14th by visiting www.rotaryandover.org and while you are there, look around at all we do. You could be a part of a growing “get it done” service club and make a difference in the lives of many. See you there.
