Avoiding
Brain Trauma
My wife and I enjoy
mountain biking as a favorite way to exercise and
spend time together. On a recent biking trip, I was
greatly disturbed by the number of riders who still
do not wear a helmet or the number of parents who
make their children wear a helmet but don't
themselves! What kind of example is that?
Whether your biking route is a rock and root filled
hill or the street, a helmet is essential gear. Dr.
Diane Stoler, author of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury,
taught me a lot about how easy it is to get a brain
injury from a simple spill on a bike. You don't need
a great fall, but like Humpty Dumpty, it's still
hard to get the pieces back together again. I've
treated numerous head injuries and believe me, you
don't want one! Enjoy all the great outdoor
recreations throughout the year and start off smart
and safe with an appropriate helmet for whatever
sport you participate in.
