Sports Injuries
A summer
sport's injury can change excitement and enthusiasm
to disappointment and dread. Common summer injuries
that I treat include tennis (outside) and golfers
(inside) elbow, strained backs and knees, twisted
ankles, and sciatica. Oriental medicine has been
very effective in treating these concerns (National
Institute of Health's Consortium Report, 1998) which
if incompletely healed could lead to more serious
injuries and even more time out of work and off the
beach. In my practice I use acupuncture which
releases your body's natural endorphins, adrenal
contice steroids, and white blood cells to decrease
pain and inflammation to spend up healing. This
healing reaction will also stimulate platelets to
spin out connective tissue to aid in healing
injuries to muscles.
Then if needed a combination of acupuncture and
massage can be used to release proprioceptors
(positioned sensing receptors) in the body that get
stuck on sending messages to the muscles to create
tight protective splinting of an area. This
initially helps, but will slow down the healing if
left untreated. Finally, stretching and range of
motion exercises, bio-magnet acupuncture can be
taught to maximize complete recovery and continued
health.
