Painful Menstruation
Real Solutions
for Difficult Menstruation
According to the Burton
Goldman group, 30-50% of women suffer from pain
during their menstrual cycle each month. Irregular
periods, excessive bleeding, abdominal bloating,
low-back pain, headaches, weight gain, and
irritability are other symptoms that are commonly
experienced on a monthly basis. Primary dysmenorrhea
(painful periods) is believed to be caused by excess
production of prostaglandin by the endometrial
lining of the uterus. Conventional treatment is
usually oral contraceptives or prostaglandin
inhibitors such as ibuprofen for relief of the
symptoms.
Oriental medicine has been treating these conditions
for centuries and offers very real solutions for
many women. A study of managing primary dysmenorrhea
with acupuncture by JM Helms followed patients who
had this diagnosis for an average of 12 years. The
group that used acupuncture showed a clear decrease
in both menstrual pain and use of pain medication.
My goal in treating menstrual conditions is to
significantly reduce or eliminate your discomfort as
well as use Oriental medicine to improve your
overall health. Your personal characteristics such
as chronic sore back, unusually tired and weak
following your cycle, or hesitant, irregular menses
with clots help diagnose your condition.
From here, a treatment plan is developed which may
include acupuncture, herbal medicine, vitamins, or
home bio-magnetic treatments. I’ve enjoyed seeing
mothers and their daughters who have suffered and
compromised their lifestyle for years experience the
freedom of regulating their monthly cycle. They tell
me their work, school, and relationships have
benefited from such a basic change in health.
